Tempe, AZ February 2, 2012 – Today the Maricopa Community Colleges Faculty Association launched a campaign to block concealed-carry gun legislation on Arizona college and university campuses.

The Faculty Association’s campaign is aimed at defeating SB 1474 which allows anyone with a valid Arizona permit to carry a weapon on college and university campuses. The campaign includes a website, and an iFilm designed to educate citizens that guns on campus just don’t make sense.

College campuses are already safe environments and violence is very rare. The campaign also emphasizes that most Arizona citizens, even gun owners, don’t think guns on college campuses make sense.

While the proposed legislation does allow colleges to prevent carrying concealed weapons in buildings, it requires secure gun lockers and clearly posted signs to be placed at building entrances. The cost of the opt-out clause in the bill is a hidden tax hike on the citizens of Arizona in the form or higher college tuition and property taxes, as the bill appropriates no funding for the required multi-million dollar infrastructure upgrades.

The faculty of the Maricopa Community College District were polled and are overwhelmingly opposed to guns on campus.  They are concerned about the effect of guns on campus to the academic atmosphere and the frank and open exchange of ideas.  Their position is not based on opposition to guns  or to the second amendment.  They simply don’t believe that it makes common sense to legally introduce guns on public college campuses.
