Support for faculty in and out of the classroom
Make a direct and immediate difference for students! The Faculty Association provides an opportunity for scholarships and emergency grants to help students in need through the Maricopa Colleges Faculty Foundation.
Help make decisions affecting your profession, your colleagues and students. The Faculty Association actively promotes shared governance and faculty leadership to maintain professional integrity and accountability while empowering faculty in policy and governance.
Protect academic freedom, which is under relentless attack by political enemies, judicial decisions, and legislative instigators. The Faculty Association maintains constant vigilance on these and related matters. It also offers educational workshops on shared governance, academic freedom, peer review, and other professional values and standards.
Resolve misunderstandings and maintain healthy work relationships. The Faculty Association supports faculty involved in grievance and resolution of controversy processes to help navigate difficult situations.
Make your voice heard. The Faculty Association Political Action Committee (FacPAC) is the only political action committee in Arizona composed of higher education faculty. Through voluntary contributions to the Faculty PAC, in recent years we have made a decisive difference in electing governing board members who support students and understand the faculty’s role in achieving student success.
Know that we support and fight for your concerns. The Faculty Association retains Mike Bielecki of the law firm of Lewis Roca Rothgerber to advocate for the interests of our members in legislative, governmental, and other forums. Mike has been essential to our efforts in fighting the Guns on Campus legislation and the recent attacks on our pension. He has also been instrumental in advising the FacPAC on Governing Board and state legislature elections.
Enjoy the benefit of Legal Counsel for professional needs. The Faculty Association retains the services of Jim Barton and Jacqueline Mendez Soto of Barton Mendez Soto PLLC to help protect the employment rights of members.
If you would like to request a consultation for a work-related (MCCCD) matter, please contact your Faculty Senate President (FSP). All requests related to your employment must be sent via your Faculty Senate President at your college. It is preferred that you use a personal email account for any communications regarding requests for legal counsel. Once received, requests are reviewed by the Council of Presidents, a body composed of all 10 College FSPs and the Faculty Association Presidents.
Faculty Association members are also able to access Legal Counsel for personal reasons.
Free Wills, Living Wills & Healthcare Power of Attorney
Get your important papers in order. Faculty Association members and partners are entitled to a free Will, Living Will, and Healthcare Power of Attorney.
Up to One-Hour Consultation on Any Legal Matter
As a Faculty Association member, you and your partner are entitled to a free one-hour consultation with an attorney on any legal matter. This service will allow you to understand the legal framing of your issue, even if our associated attorneys do not ultimately represent you in your case.
Reduced Fee Legal Services
As a Faculty Association member, you and your partner are entitled to receive legal services related to civil litigation, such as contract disputes, business transactions, employment law matters, and family law matters at an hourly rate of 50% of Barton Mendez Soto PLLC’s ordinary rate. If for any reason BMS cannot help you, the firm will assist you in connecting with a firm that can.
If you would like to request a consultation for a personal matter (e.g., a will), please email FECPersonnel@gmail.com. It is preferred that you use a personal email account for any communications regarding requests for legal counsel. Once received, you will be contacted by our Personnel Officer.
